Tom Scarff, founder of MIDI Music Kits, has been working in the Electronics Industry for more than 30 years. He spent nearly 15 years working in maintenance and design and development in the Irish national broadcasting organisation, RTE. More recently he has been employed in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) lecturing in Computer and Electronic Engineering and in Music Technology. He has also published a number of articles on topics including audio, music and MIDI in particular.
He has designed and produced a number of MIDI circuit designs using the ATmega series of micro-controllers. The designs are based on the Arduino and are compatible with the open-source IDE which can be downloaded for free (currently for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux).
He has spent many years working in the development and design of electronic music, building many different types of MIDI musical instruments. He saw how difficult it was to create simple MIDI instruments and he wanted to create something that makes it easier for people to create, build, connect and enjoy making their own musical instruments.
